FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The City has announced that there will be a three-strike rule regarding recycling bins and repeat offenders.

The City’s Bylaw Department has been inspecting recycling bins and issuing warnings and tickets, many of these to repeat offenders.

In order to deal with residents who continue to contaminate the recycling bins, there will be a three-strike rule. Meaning you have three chances to recycle correctly, or else your blue recycling bin will be removed.

To get your bin back, the three tickets issued must be paid as well as an administrative fee.

In May, council was presented an action plan to reduce contamination levels after reports of large amounts of garbage found in the bins.

Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, Victor Shopland, presented several options to council to help mitigate contamination, such as hiring additional staff to conduct bin audits and stricter penalties for offenders.
