FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Thanks to a great idea from a Lake View Credit Union staff member, a blanket drive saw almost $4,000 and nearly 500 blankets donated to the SPCA.

Responding to the story earlier this year about 119 dogs surrendered to the South Peace SPCA, Lake View Credit Union Foundation started a blanket drive. For every blanket donated, LVCU Foundation donated $8.

Between March 16th and April 9th, 481 blankets were donated, meaning LVCU Foundation gave $3,848 to the SPCA.

LVCU CEO Lori Archibald says this cause is close to her heart.

“As a lifelong pet owner and dog lover, this cause is near and dear to my heart, as it is to many people,” says Archibald. “I’d personally like to thank everyone who donated blankets, and all of us here at Lake View are so grateful for the response and grateful to our members, without whom we wouldn’t be able to engage our community in this way.”

The rescue of 119 dogs from a trailer in Fort Nelson was the largest rescue that anyone on the South Peace SPCA staff had ever been involved with, says branch manager Wendy Davies.

“We were initially overwhelmed and our resources, including blankets and supplies, were quickly depleted,” says Davies. “The rapid response from so many volunteers and donors was truly astonishing, and we are deeply moved by the phenomenal support.”

Even though the blanket drive has concluded, the SPCA still needs support. The organization is always looking for more volunteers and donors.

“The lives of these precious little dogs have been forever changed thanks to the love and care from people throughout our region.”
