FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Trystan Macleod, who goes by the last name “Jones” for public appearances, gave a TedTalk at Simon Fraser University about racism in rural communities.

Macleod, 23, is a political science student at SFU and will appear on Moose Talks this Friday.  The University invited him to share his experiences growing up in Fort St. John as the foundation for the TedTalk.

Macleod is part Scottish, Welsh, and Asian and was the target of racial slurs, along with his younger brother, after a grocery trip in May 2020. In response, Macleod took part in the June Black Lives Matter march.

In a Facebook post, Macleod wrote about the experience last spring.

“The colour of my skin and the slant of my eyes have nothing to do with who I am as a person. I was raised on a farm. We live in 2020. Racism should not exist,” said Macleod.

Macleod’s TedTalk is called The Rural Reality: A Conversation on Race in Rural Canada.

Macleod will join Dub on Moose Talks this week, which can be viewed on both the Moose FM and Energeticcity Facebook page.
