DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – As the first day of spring approaches Saturday, the Peace-Liard Region Conservation Officers want residents to be aware of the Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation (OBSCR) and local venting windows before debris burning.

CO’s are encouraging other means of getting rid of vegetative disposal like chipping or composting. However, should you have to burn, make sure to use dry material as it will help to minimize the smoke and its impacts on neighbours and nearby communities.

The OBSCR applies to open-fire combustion of vegetative debris from land clearing, forest operations, agriculture and silviculture, and utility right of ways. It does not apply to campfires, burning of leaves, foliage, weeds, crops for domestic to agricultural purposes.

Any open burning is to meet the bylaw requirements that local governments have set. Open fires may also comply with any open burning prohibition, ban from a fire department or local government. Any violations of the OBSCR could result in fines up to $200,000.

It is also an offence under the Environmental Management Act for anyone to cause or allow waste to be introduced into the environment, including smoke. It could result in fines up to $1 million and/or six months imprisonment.
