RICHMOND, B.C. – In many parts of the province, drivers are starting to experience winter conditions.

With the forecast of La Niña, a climate phenomenon that results in cooler temperatures, the province is set to experience a colder and more wet winter than previous years. With this, the Winter Driving Safety Alliance is urging drivers, workers and, employers to prepare for the upcoming winter driving conditions with its Shift Into Winter Campaign.

Winter driving conditions can be dangerous across the province, from rain and fog to snow and ice. Even the most experienced drivers can be challenged by cold temperatures, slippery roads, and reduced visibility.

The Shift Into Winter website provides information for drivers on how to prepare for winter driving. It has information for employers around planning, implementing, and monitoring a winter driving safety program. Any employers and supervisors interested can access an online course and use resources provided in the employer toolkit, which has sample winter driving policies, procedures, and templates.

The Winter Driving Safety Alliance also encourages drivers and employers to follow the following tips to stay safe on the road this winter:

Employers have a legal responsibility to ensure their employees’ health and safety who drive for work, regardless of whether they drive a company-owned or personal vehicle.
