GRANDE PRAIRIE, A.B. – Following the Thanksgiving long weekend, the City of Grande Prairie has seen an increase in the amount of new COVID-19 cases, prompting the City to be put under a provincial watch.

According to Alberta Health Services, 17 new cases were reported between Friday and Monday, and an additional two new cases were reported on Wednesday, making for a total of 43 active cases in the municipality.

The provincial watch was declared as the rate of active cases is above 50 per population of 100,000. The rate for Grande Prairie sits at 55.6 per 100,000.

In addition, Alberta Health declared an outbreak at the Grande Prairie Walmart Supercentre, where there have been 10 cases confirmed at that location.

Residents are being reminded to follow public health recommendations, such as physical distancing, to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
