FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The judges have picked a winner of the Alaska Highway Theme Song contest, but they won’t reveal their pick until a People’s Choice title is given to one of the songs.

The Peace Liard Arts Council has released a list of their submissions for the contest, and has them on display for voters to pick their favourite.

“We received 23 submissions in all, so they’re all up on the website,” said Donna Kane with the Peace Liard Arts Council. According to her, a lot of submissions came in right before the deadline of Nov. 30, 2015.

Kane says they have received so many stellar submissions that they will also be awarding a big prize to the people’s choice, though that hasn’t been determined. The top pick of the judges, however, will win $1,000 and have their song played at 2017 Alaska Highway celebrations.

She also noted that there is a distinct possibility of a CD being released with a select number of songs on it.

“I thought it would be great to have a CD that tourists and community members could put in their vehicle, and drive up the highway listening to those songs,” she said.

If this happened, she adds, the songs would be re-recorded to ensure so they’re all on the same page as far as recording value goes.

Voting ends of Feb. 29, 2016.
