Slow start does in Huskies against JDA Kings

The Fort St. John Huskies returned to game action Saturday night against the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings for their first game in two weeks. The time away from the rink showed as the Huskies got off to a slow start and weren’t able to recover as they lost 5-4.

Grande Prairie controlled the majority of the opening period outshooting Fort St. John 20-8, and going to the dressing room with a 3-0 lead.

Despite being down three and being badly outplayed at the start of the game, The Huskies attempted to battle their way back. The shots were balanced at 12-11 in favour of Fort St. John as the Huskies trailed 5-3 after 40 minutes.

Play in the third was heavily in favour of the Huskies but they could not find the tying goal. Shots were 14-7 in the frame as they closed to within one, and a shot in the dying seconds by Kody Disher hit the knob of the goalies stick to stay out of the net as the JDA Kings held on to win.

Scoring for the Huskies were Cayle Bell (3), and Ryan McDonald.

The game showcased the gradual improvement of the Huskies special teams as they went 2/3 on the power play and 4/4 on the penalty kill.

Making up for the last two weeks away from game action the Huskies will have their hands full over the next six days. They’ll be on home ice for three games against Fairview, Grande Prairie, and Peace River on Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday respectively.
