Steelhead LNG announced today a pre-construction agreement with pipeline developer Williams to start the design and regulatory approvals for the Island Gas Connector Project.

This proposed natural gas pipeline would transport natural gas to Vancouver Island, where Steelhead LNG is exploring the development of LNG facilities.

Steelhead LNG is pursuing the development of a floating natural gas liquefaction and export facility with the Malahat First Nation – it would be approximately 8 km south of Mill Bay, on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

The Project would transport natural gas about 50 km from Sumas, Washington. From there, it would travel 75 km subsea, landing directly at the proposed Malahat site.

On the other side of the Island, the company is also exploring the development of a proposed LNG facility with the Huu-ay-aht First Nations at Sarita Bay, 75 km southwest of Port Alberni.

“Steelhead looks forward to working with potentially affected Aboriginal groups in Canada to explore opportunities for them to share in the economic benefits of the Canadian portion of the Project.”  said Nigel Kuzemko, CEO of Steelhead LNG.

Both companies say they are also ready to “undertake an extensive consultation and engagement process with potentially affected Canadian Aboriginal groups, United States Tribes, landowners, local stakeholders and communities,” to complete the project.

As an international pipeline, the Project will be subject to the approval of both the US’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and Canada’s National Energy Board.
