NLC argues it will make for better viewing by friends and family, and notes it is a similar format to the provincial competition held in Abbotsford. Four of the events will be held in other locations on the campus while the Junior Skills division will take place in the gym.
As before, the competition is open to college students and apprentices under the age of 29 in the Post-Secondary division which includes Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Carpentry (Level 3), Culinary Arts (Cook 1), Esthetics and Nail Care, Hairdressing, and Welding.
Grade 11 and 12 high school and dual credit students will compete in the Secondary division in Carpentry, Architectural Computer Assisted Drafting and/or Mechanical CAD, Baking, Cabinet making, 2D Animation (Flash), 3D Animation, Culinary Arts, Graphic Design, Hairdressing, Public Speaking, TV/Video Production, VEX Robotics, and Welding (Level C).
Students in grades 6 to 10 can also get an introduction to the trades in the Junior Skills division, which includes the Spaghetti Bridge, Gravity Car, Sumo Robot and Gear Bots Challenge (Lego Robotics) events.
Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. on January 31 and competition will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with awards given out at 3:30 p.m. All events are open for public viewing.
Students who receive a gold medal in their division will take part in the Provincial Skills competition in Abbotsford in April.
