In the SunLife Financial Competitive Division, Dawson Creek Curling Club’s Team Steinke, comprised of skip Jordan Steinke, third Jason Ginter, second Tristan Steinke and lead Renee Sonnenberg, dethroned three-time champion Kurt Balderston 6-0.

Sonnenberg spared for the team’s original lead Brett Winfield, who was unable to play after coming down with the flu.

The upset came without team Steinke ever having the advantage of the hammer, but the team fought hard, stealing two points in the fifth end thanks to a missed shot by team Balderston. Steinke then stole four more in the sixth end, when Balderston’s final draw came up light.

The team from Dawson Creek took home a cool $3,000 for their winning efforts.

Moving to the Encana Challenge Division, Fort St. John’s Team Cooper brought back a championship to the Energetic City. Team Cooper, consisting of skip Bob Cooper, third Bruce Craig, second Darryl Horst and lead Larry London, defeated the returning champions from Grande Prairie, Team Devin Burkitt, by a score of 7-5.

Fort St. John’s team Cooper earned themselves three points in the second, then stole a single point in the third to lead the Grande Prairie team 4-2. The Cooper squad never surrendered the lead after that, but did have to make a draw in the final end to secure the victory.

With the win, the team earned themselves a $2,000 pay day.

Finally, in the Canwest Group Benefits Junior Division, Fahler Curling Club’s Team Dustin Turcotte emerged victorious over team Kayla Skrlik of Peace River 6-5, scoring two in the final end to steal the win, earning the prize of $750.

The Junior Division also included Team Sterling Middleton, representing the Fort St. John Curling Club, who defeated team Skrlik in the qualifying round, but lost to team Turcotte in the final preliminary game, resulting in a loss of a playoff spot.

Following the weekend, a handful of teams also earned spots in the Pomeroy Inn & Suites Prairie Showdown World Curling Tour Cash Spiel. Teams that gained entrance include Team Steinke of Dawson Creek, Team Balderston of Sexsmith and Edmonton’s Team Vavrek.

The upcoming Cash Spiel will be held from March 14-17 at the Grande Prairie Curling Club.
