Nurses Week is celebrated across the country every year to honour the commitment nurses have to their profession, and increase awareness of the public and policy makers and government of the many contributions of nurses to the well-being of Canadians.

Mary Tylosky, Public Health Professional Support Representative for the College of Registered Nurses of B.C., says, "It's also an opportunity to educate Canadians about health issues providing information they need to make about their health and promote the role of the nurse."

"As you are aware," she adds, "there are many nurses working Fort St. John in a variety of capacities such as the hospital, mental health, community health, public health, occupational health, to name a few. There are also private nurses hired."

The week also coincides with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who is considered the founder of modern nursing.
