Only 2,000 customers are without power following a freak snow storm on Friday.
At the height of the power outage, over 7,000 customers were without power and there were over 100 separate outages. Hydro hopes to connect the remainder of the people today or at the very latest by Monday.
The hardest hit area is in the South Peace and the Progress and Groundbirch regions. The majority of the 2,000 customers without power are in this region and according to BC Hydro’s Dan Von Hollen, they hope to have power restored to as many customers as possible, but they won’t have them all back today. Hydro expects a large number will still be without power until at least Monday.
A number of critical services in the Dawson Creek area were hit hard and needed to be fixed in the interest of public safety. Power was out at the sewer facility in Dawson Creek along with vital communication towers.
In the Fort St. John area there are only about 29 customers without power in the Cecil Lake and Baldonnel communities. Hydro hopes to have all of those restored by 4pm this afternoon.
Shaw Cable has also been affected by the outage. Even with the power on in many homes in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John there is still an outage with Shaw Cable. At this time they are working to resolve the issue but do not have a definitive time when services will be restored.
Extra crews from Vancouver and Kelowna will assist local staff as they arrived late Sunday night.
For many the lights went out Friday night or early Saturday. Hydro is encouraging people to always be prepared in the case of an outage. Purchase supplies like food, water, batteries and a battery operated radio. You can find out more on BC Hydro’s website.
In Fort St. John over 14 cm of snow fell on Saturday adding to the 4 cm on Friday. In the South Peace, over 44 mm of precipitation fell on Friday and Saturday. Environment Canada doesn’t keep track of snowfall in the South Peace.
