The Mayor of Tumbler Ridge wants the province to start allowing Segways on streets and sidewalks.

The Segway is a two wheel electric vehicle that can travel about 20 km an hour and Larry White believes they would be perfect for a small town like his.

According to the CBC, Mayor White says the community doesn’t have a lot of traffic or pedestrians on the sidewalks or streets and the Segway would allow people to leave their cars at home.

Currently the Segway cannot be legally operated on roads or sidewalks in BC because it doesn’t meet current safety standards. The main reasons are the machines don’t have turn signals or brake lights.

Tumbler Ridge will ask the Union of BC Municipalities to lobby the province to change the current law.
