The Pembina Institute warns the BC government will be held accountable, if plans to allow expansion of the oil and gas industry in this area, derail provincial efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Pembina Institute climate change expert Matt Horne says proposed gas projects in northeastern BC, will increase carbon emissions, threatening BC’s goal of trimming greenhouse emissions, by one-third by 2020.
The Canadian Press says Spectra Energy wants to expand its BC operations, but claims it can also cut greenhouse gases by pumping carbon underground.
Energy Minister Blair Lekstrom is quoted as saying the government and Spectra are conducting a joint capture pilot project, which could set the direction for future energy policy.
However, the CP also says, the company admits storing carbon underground is expensive, and notes there are no laws against venting gas emissions into the atmosphere.
