The stubborn forest fire Northwest of Fort Nelson is now nearly two weeks old but it continues to grow albeit at a somewhat slower pace.
Prince George Fire Centre Information officer Jillian Chimko, confirms erractic winds and heavy smoke forced the closure of the Alaska Highway again yesterday, between Fireside and the Liard Hot Springs, and she also confirms the fire prompted new evacuation orders last evening… [asset|aid=1495|format=mp3player|formatter=asset_bonus|title=32875fa1b2cd26fad754ca580085c71f-chimko_1_Pub.mp3]
Even though the highway is reopened today, motorists are advised to expects delays in that area and the road could be closed again on short notice. The evacuation order was lifted Thursday morning by the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality. The evacuation alert remains in place.
88 fire-fighters with 9 pieces of heavy equipment and six helicopters, are still battling, the lightning caused blaze, which remains only 15 percent contained.
