City of Fort St. John warns of bear sighting

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The City of Fort St. John has issued a wildlife alert following reports of a bear in the city on June 23rd. 

According to a Facebook post from the City of Fort St. John on June 23rd, the city received reports of a bear sighting near The Station on the east side of town.  

The city said The Station is a neighbourhood east of 86th Street and South of 85th Avenue.

Residents are urged to use caution while in the area and remain aware.

Dog owners should keep their dogs on a leash and away from wild animals. 

The city asks residents to avoid surprising wildlife by making noise or by travelling in groups and to stay away from animal feeding sites.

If you encounter a black bear, do not turn around and run; speak calmly but firmly while trying to appear large and slowly back away.

If the animal shows signs of aggression, the city recommends throwing items at it. 

If encountering a grizzly bear, avoid eye contact and remain calm. Move back slowly and do not act aggressively. 

Dangerous wildlife such as bears, cougars, wolves, or coyotes can be reported to the BC Conservation Officer Service by calling 1-877-952-7277.
