FORT NELSON, B.C. — March’s Co-op Community Champion wants to bring a sense of community in the tiny town of Fort Nelson, to isolated people as well as newcomers.

Seanah Mollica is the executive director of the Fort Nelson Community Literacy Society, and is also a mother of two youngsters.

Her initial reaction to being named Co-Op Community Champion was being “very honoured someone would think” of her.

The nomination reads: “Seanah is truly a rare individual; she is a genuine upstander.

Mollica said: “That’s such wonderful news. That’s just lovely news to get.”

Although she is initially from Nova Scotia, Mollica refers to Fort Nelson as “home” as she’s “been there a long time.”

The society is a non-profit which offers tutoring, workshops, events and initiatives toward community development, according to its website.

Mollica’s job entails offering a helping hand with the programs offered at the centre and seeking new relationships to develop those initiatives.

She told Energeticcity.ca she can’t take credit for all the society’s success, saying it has been “shaped by many others and is the result of the people who built it, and the community members who support it.”

“It’s been a privilege to help in creating its vision and to have been in the driver’s seat for these past 15 years,” said Mollica.

Mollica also assists with various boards and organizations within Fort Nelson, including the Homelessness Community Action Project, the Northern Lamplighters Activity Centre Association and the Rotary Club of Fort Nelson.

She’s also heavily involved in the town’s cultural festival, CultureFest, which is hosted by the Community Literacy Society.

“We see a lot of value in people connecting and understanding each other,” said Mollica. “We know that builds stronger support networks and a stronger community as a whole.

“It’s a really small place, so it’s very easy for people to isolate here. It’s especially important with new community members coming that they’re able to build a positive social support network when they’re here.”

As a result of her nomination, Mollica will receive a gift card of up to $100 at the Co-op.
