Independent Investigations Office of BC seeks witnesses to Surrey, B.C., shooting

SURREY — British Columbia’s Independent Investigations Office says it’s hoping to hear from witnesses to a police-involved shooting in Metro Vancouver that left a man with minor injuries.

The Surrey Police Service says officers were called to a home on 81 Avenue on a report of a person with a weapon on Sunday night, and the man allegedly confronted police with an “edged weapon” during an attempted arrest.

Police say officers shot the man, and he was treated by paramedics before being taken to the hospital.

The police service says it has notified the Independent Investigations Office of BC, which is tasked with probing cases where people are injured in interactions with police to determine if their action or inaction caused “serious harm.”

The Independent Investigations Office says officers used both “less-lethal weapons” and a gun during the confrontation.

The civilian oversight agency says it is now looking into whether “there are reasonable grounds to believe” officers committed an offence during interactions that result in injury or death.
