PROPHET RIVER, B.C. — A northeast B.C First Nation’s cultural celebration will return on an earlier date this year.

Prophet River First Nation’s (PRFN) Treaty Days have been scheduled to begin on Thursday, June 4th and wrap up on Saturday, June 7th.

This was confirmed in a Facebook post on PRFN’s page on January 30th. The post says the event is “a meaningful weekend of culture, connection, celebration and community pride.”

PRFN Chief Valerie Askoty told Energeticcity.ca the reason behind the 50th edition taking place in August of last year was due to being “late in getting things together.”

“There are so many other events that are happening, so we are trying to get ahead of the game,” said Askoty. “[In 2024] we had it in June. [For 2026] we are going back to our June dates.”

The celebration honours the Treaty 8 agreement, fosters friendships both within and outside the Indigenous community and first began in 1975.

Askoty said the itinerary, which has yet to be released, will follow the same format and activities as last year, including archery, drumming, hand games, entertainers and more.

She did say Indian Car Pile-Up, a game which features people trying to fit inside a tiny car, will take place at Treaty Days in 2026.

Musical guests have not been lined up yet but Askoty confirmed they will be released at a later date.

She also confirmed to Energeticcity.ca PRFN’s third Gathering of Drummers will take place in July.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Askoty. “[Guests are] going to experience a lot of fun with interaction with members and just really see how we celebrate our culture.”

PRFN Treaty Days will take place from June 4th to June 7th, 2026 on the grounds of Prophet River First Nation.
