FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A bottle drive held in Fort St. John has raised nearly $1,600 to support an upcoming trip for local army cadets.

The Fort St. John Army Cadets’ fundraiser took place on January 17th and was made possible through a partnership with the 2276 Fort St. John Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, the FSJ Return-It bottle depot and the local cadet Support Committee.

Community members were able to drop off used bottles and cans at Cabre Oilfield or arrange pick-ups, with the recyclables later taken to Return-It in exchange for money.

According to commanding officer Dan Davies, the initiative raised “just under $1,600,” with funds supporting a spring break trip to Canadian Forces Base Edmonton.

Davies told Energeticcity.ca fundraising and community involvement are essential parts of the cadet program.

“Fundraising and having [engagement] in the community is an important part of any organization, especially in cadets,” Davies said.

“It is good for the cadets to be engaged in fundraising and volunteering. They certainly are a little bit more motivated working for an exciting trip like the one to Edmonton in March.”
