Girl, 11, who donated birthday money to children and seniors in need named Co-op Community Champion
Eleven-year-old Elizabeth Lagasse used her birthday money to buy gifts and other items for families in need through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A local 11-year-old girl has been named December’s Co-op Community Champion for her generosity and charitable efforts.
Elizabeth Lagasse was selected for the honour after using her birthday money to buy Christmas gifts for children and seniors in need through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program.
Her father, Justin Lagasse, said her actions were entirely self-driven.
“We didn’t even tell her about the Angel Tree or buying gifts for kids,” he said. “It was just all her idea, all her doing.”
Elizabeth told Energeticcity.ca she was surprised to receive the recognition and helping others just feels natural to her.
“I had so many birthday presents already,” she said.
According to Justin, when asked if she was sure she wanted to use her birthday money in this way, Elizabeth said: “I have everything I could ever need and want. I just want other kids to have that chance too.”

This isn’t the first time Elizabeth has stepped up to support the community. In 2020, she raised nearly $2,300 for the Salvation Army’s toy drive by selling homemade bracelets, something she says she hopes to do again.
“I did it once. We were going to do it again, but we just didn’t get to it,” she said. “I think I might do it next year.”
Justin added seeing Elizabeth choose generosity has inspired their whole family.
“She has inspired us to continue doing small acts of kindness, as we know it can mean the world to someone receiving it,” he said.
Both Elizabeth and Justin told Energeticcity.ca they hope her story encourages others to spread kindness this holiday season.
“A small act of kindness can go a long way,” Justin said. “Even just a simple smile or a ‘merry Christmas’ can change somebody’s day.”
Elizabeth shared her own message: “Stay strong, and remember there are a whole bunch of people who are there for you that can help.”
The Co-op Community Champion program recognizes individuals in Fort St. John who make meaningful contributions to their community.
