FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — City council has approved construction costs for a new multi-use pavilion at Surerus Park.

The existing pavilion was closed to the public in early 2025, as the bathrooms no longer met public-use standards. Throughout the summer, temporary washrooms were utilized in the park.

Of two bids received by the city for construction costs, the council awarded the work to Northern Legendary Construction, which submitted an estimate of $1.7 million, with an option to accelerate the conclusion of construction from September 30th, 2026 to June 15th, 2026 for an additional $205,000. This would bring the total cost of the project to approximately $1.9 million.

During the November 24th meeting, council voted to award the tender at the $1.7 million price.

The report explained the new pavilion would feature four gender-neutral washrooms with individual entrances, a bay for mowing equipment and storage, a breakroom and staff washroom on the second floor, storage rooms for user groups such as sports, an event rental area with handwashing facilities and a mechanical room and small tools storage area.

While wooden playground equipment in the area will be removed for the construction, the overall upgrade plan for the park includes room for potential improvements including a new playground with rubber surfacing.

Demolition of the old building will begin once construction on the new one is complete.

No information was provided in the meeting as to when construction will begin, however following the approval of the bid, city staff will issue a letter to the company to begin planning and construction.
