FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The regional district has begun investigating ‘seniors aging in place’ programs for three electoral areas.

On October 2nd, the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) board of directors approved three recommendations asking to investigate the feasibility of expanding the Seniors Aging in Place Program into Electoral Areas B, C and E.

These electoral areas account for all of the PRRD except for Electoral Area D, which covers a part of the region stretching from the District of Taylor to the Alberta border and to Kakwa Park.

The Seniors Aging in Place Program provides assistance to seniors wishing to age in their homes rather than in assisted living by helping with housekeeping and snow removal support visits, as well as meal delivery services.

The three recommendations were put forward to the board by the electoral area directors committee, who approved them in a September 11th meeting.

In November 2024 the program received a three-year funding extension from the PRRD to the tune of approximately $6.25 million.

As of November, the program supported around 200 seniors, and was operated by the PRRD and the Dawson Creek Society for Community Living.

No information was provided during the meeting regarding what the investigation would look like, how long it would take or when the results could be expected to return to the board for review.
