Drivers fined after tractor-trailer breaks apart in Fort Nelson

FORT NELSON, B.C. — The BC Highway Patrol has fined multiple drivers after a tractor-trailer broke down while attempting a U-turn.

Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol said an officer was travelling through Fort Nelson on June 19th when he discovered the truck carrying a load of mail blocking the road. 

“The trailer had snapped a rear axle and blown its axle airbags when the drivers attempted a 180-degree turn in the parking lot,” said McLaughlin. 

McLaughlin explained a tow truck was called to tow away the vehicle for further inspection, but after further violations were found, the two truck drivers were ticketed for falsified or incorrect log books.

The BC Highway Patrol officer said a competitor truck also tried to take the truck but also received a ticket for driving while using an electronic device.

“Most commercial drivers understand that there is a higher expectation of safety and professionalism for people who drive big, heavy rigs,” McLaughlin said. 

“When they don’t take their responsibilities seriously enough, BC Highway Patrol will be there.”
