FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) is hosting a slew of FireSmart community events – including in Fort St. John, Charlie Lake and Chetwynd – in order to strengthen wildfire resilience across the Peace region.
The free, family-friendly events offer locals an opportunity to learn more about the FireSmart program and connect with local experts.
This is the fifth year the PRRD has provided residents with information regarding the FireSmart program — a provincial initiative that aims to reduce wildfire risk and damage to homes, communities and forests.
The regional district said the Peace region faces unique risks when it comes to wildfire due to ongoing drought, strong winds and homes located close to forests.
“The PRRD is committed to long-term wildfire resilience,” said PRRD board chair Leonard Hiebert in a press release. “Simple yard work can save homes and strengthen wildfire resilience in communities.
“The FireSmart program provides all rural residents with practical, proven-effective tools to protect our homes and properties and prepare for the future.”
