FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Below are the latest sentences handed down from the Fort St. John, Dawson Creek and Chetwynd provincial courts between March 31st and April 4th.

Fort St. John Provincial Court sentencing, March 31st

Dylan Sylvester Apsassin (born 1989):

Apsassin was found guilty of impaired operation by alcohol or drugs, dangerous operation of a conveyance, driving while prohibited and/or with a suspended licence, uttering threats to cause death and/or bodily harm, and two counts of breaching a release order, for incidents in Fort St. John and the Blueberry River Indigenous reserve between October 2023 and November 2024.

Apsassin was issued eight three-year driving prohibitions, eight 18-month probation periods and eight suspended sentences, where the accused is given conditions to follow. 

Kayla Candice Jensen (born 1983):

Jensen was found guilty of driving while prohibited and/or with a suspended licence for an incident in Fort St. John on October 17th, 2024. Jensen was issued a $500 fine, a one-year driving prohibition and a $75 victim surcharge, which goes towards helping the victims of a crime.

Arlen Kane Marshall (born 1982):

Marshall was found guilty of breaching a probation order and theft of $5,000 or under for incidents in Fort St. John during July and August 2024. Marshall was sentenced to a total of 40 days in jail and received two 12-month probation orders.

Travis Dion Sharyk (born 1990):

Sharyk was found guilty of breaking and entering with intent to commit an offence, arson damaging property, three counts of breaching a release order and one count of taking and/or occupying a vehicle or vessel without the owners’ consent, for incidents in Fort St. John and Kamloops between December 2023 and October 2024.

Sharyk was sentenced to a combined total of 26 days in jail in addition to jail time served. Sharyk was also issued two 10-year firearm prohibitions and four 18-month probation orders.

Sharyk also received a $500 recognizance after the allegation for an incident that took place in Fort St. John on July 20th, 2024. If they break the conditions laid out by the court, they must pay the $500.

Fort St. John Provincial Court sentencing, April 2nd

Nathan Robert Wayne Field (born 1991):

Field was found guilty of two counts of breaching a probation order, breaking and entering and committing an indictable offence, possession of a firearm contrary to an order, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief $5,000 or under, assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm, for incidents in Fort St. John between March and June 2024.

Field was sentenced to a combined total of 180 days in jail in addition to jail time served. Field was also subjected to forfeiture, which allows the government to seize property and assets “tainted” by crime, and was issued eight two-year probation orders.

Prikshit Sharma (born 1993):

Sharma was found guilty of assault for an incident in Fort St. John on February 5th, 2024. Sharma was issued an absolute discharge, meaning the accused was found guilty, but no conviction is registered, and there are no conditions to follow.

Elizabeth Louise Phinney (born 1965):

Phinney was found guilty of impaired operation by alcohol or drugs for an incident in Fort St. John on March 18th, 2024. Phinney was issued a $1,500 fine and a one-year criminal driving prohibition.

Chetwynd Provincial Court sentencing, April 3rd

Andrew Gilbert Alexander Brertton (born 2001):

Brertton was found guilty of driving while prohibited and/or with a suspended licence for an incident in Hudson’s Hope on December 26th, 2023. Brertton was issued a $1,000 fine and a 30-day conditional sentence, which is a sentence to be served outside of jail under strict conditions, sometimes called “house arrest.”

Fort St. John Provincial Court sentencing, April 4th

Justin Sewell

Sewell pleaded guilty to sexual assault, unlawfully recording intimate images and voyeurism in November 2022 after a sexual assault investigation that started in 2019.

Sewell was issued conditional sentences to be served concurrently, with one lasting three months, another six months and the longest lasting two years less a day.

Sewell was also ordered to pay $600 in victim surcharges and received a 10-year firearm prohibition.

Dawson Creek Provincial Court sentencing, April 4th

Coty Steven Auger (born 1988):

Auger was found guilty of hunting, taking, trapping, wounding and/or killing wildlife out of season and of failing to remove edible portions of an animal carcass for an incident in Tumbler Ridge on June 15th, 2022.

Auger was issued fines totalling $1,500 and subjected to forfeiture.
