FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Staff members with the City of Fort St. John have received “multiple reports” of residents receiving scam texts from people claiming to represent the city

The messages reportedly indicate that the recipient has outstanding parking fines.

In a Facebook post from the city on Wednesday, March 26th, staff members are reminding residents that they don’t send text messages about outstanding bills in the wake of the new scam.

“We DO NOT use text messaging to contact you regarding any outstanding payments on your city accounts,” the social media post reads.

This isn’t the only scam that’s circulating through northeastern B.C. Earlier this month, Northern Health took to social media warning of scammers impersonating its employees.

Northern Health was made to issue an almost identical warning last year due to a similar series of incidents.

This also isn’t the first time fraudsters have impersonated Fort St. John city staff: last July, a series of scam phone calls circulated throughout the community.

Anyone who has been a victim of fraud or a scam can report it to the Fort St. John RCMP detachment or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
