Powers received multiple nominations, one of which called her “an amazing teacher, who has taught for 22 years. She strives to help each and every one of her students every single day. She has a heart of gold and is very kind.”
Powers says that teaching has always been her desired career path even at a young age.
“I’ve wanted to be a teacher ever since I was a little girl,” says Powers.
Powers says she most enjoys teaching younger students how to read.

“That’s where my niche is. It pulls the grammar strings in my heart. And you can’t help but love the little ones, and teaching reading is the thing that really closes the deal for me,” said Powers.
After obtaining her degree in 1994, Powers moved to Fort St. John from Englehart, Ontario.
When asked what she would say to anyone considering a career as an educator, Powers urged more people to sign up, saying more people are needed in the field.
“We need you. We absolutely need educators that are flexible,” says Powers.
Powers says a teacher’s job can take a lot of effort and require significant investment.
“Teaching isn’t just from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; it is way bigger than that. I think a lot of people don’t realize that it does consume you but sometimes in the best of ways,” according to Powers.
