North Peace Eagles mark half-century of women’s hockey excellence this Friday 

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The North Peace Eagles Women’s Hockey Association is set to mark its half-century with a celebration in Fort St. John later this week.

Throughout its history, the club’s Facebook page says the team has seen overwhelming successes, including gold medals in the provincial championships in 2001, 2002, and 2008.

According to Ann Sawyer, women’s hockey has grown incredibly since she joined the team back in 1990

Sawyer, who plays centre, said her experiences with the team have made it like being “in a sisterhood.”

“[When] I first started, we had practices and didn’t always have places to play,” says Sawyer, who has also served as a director and ice and ref coordinator for the Eagles. “We didn’t have league games organized at the time.”

“Young girls from minor hockey would play with us when they reached 13 when [checking] started. Now, with the Northeast BC Predators, it’s great to see them have their own teams playing with their peers.”

Formed in 1974, the club previously participated in the Peace Country Female Hockey League, competing against teams from B.C. and Alberta.  

Currently, the Eagles play shinny hockey on Wednesdays during the hockey season.  

During the 2024-25 season, the Eagles have sent teams to tournaments in Dawson Creek and the Totem Old-timers tournament in Fort St. John.

The celebration on Friday evening is the cumulation of reminiscing, sharing experiences, and enjoying regional women’s hockey through the generations.

“It’s exciting to see the game has grown, and also where it could grow to potentially. It’s a social drop-in.  To reminisce about old times and reconnect with old teammates.”

“The North Peace Eagles Women’s Hockey 50th Anniversary” will occur on Friday, November 23rd, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Mighty Peace Brewery, located at 10128 95th Avenue in Fort St. John.
