FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The first generating unit at Site C is now operational, according to a press release from BC Hydro.

The utility announced that the generating unit was officially online on October 28th, following what it calls the “required testing and commissioning process.”

The five remaining generating units will be activated one by one. BC Hydro staff say they’re on track to be all active by the fall of 2025.

Meanwhile, reservoir filling is reportedly ongoing as planned.

The reservoir is more than 90 per cent full, and water levels at the dam have risen by roughly 40 metres since filling began in August, which allowed the first generating unit to be activated.

“Reservoir filling remains on schedule to be completed later this fall,” the press release reads. “The testing and commissioning work on the second generating unit is also underway.”

BC Hydro reminds residents to stay out of the reservoir area during the filling process and for at least one year after it’s complete due to safety hazards like floating debris and the nearby land still stabilizing.
