FORT NELSON, B.C. – The RCMP do not believe a fire in Fort Nelson is suspicious.

On October 11th, 2024, Northern Rockies RCMP received a call for a suspicious fire at the 4500 block of Nahanni Drive, Fort Nelson.

An abandoned residence was found to be on fire, and first responders attended.

Unhoused people commonly use the property for shelter at night.

Northern Rockies Fire Rescue attended and quickly extinguished the blaze.

Northern Rockies RCMP began an investigation with Northern Rockies Fire Rescue, and it was determined that the fire was not suspicious.

No windows were broken, and there were no signs of forced entry or suspicious persons in the area.

It is believed that a small fire was started in the back bedroom for warmth and became out of control due to the number of items, including propane tanks and gas-powered equipment, in the home.

The home has been torn down due to its structural integrity and risk to public safety.
