2024 Spirit of the Peace Pow Wow: Celebrate Indigenous Culture in Taylor, June 7-9
The 2024 Spirit of the Peace Pow Wow is fast approaching and will take place in Taylor next month.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The 2024 Spirit of the Peace Pow Wow is fast approaching and will take place in Taylor next month.
Event president Connie Greyeyes, who volunteered at the first powwow in 2006, says the event has seen significant growth and has become a place where the entire community, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, is welcomed.
“This started because of an idea to hold an event for the youth here in Fort St. John so they could attend powwows,” said Greyeyes. “Unfortunately, a venue in Fort St. John wasn’t available.”

“That was when [former Taylor] Mayor Fred Jarvis stepped in and offered us a chance to hold our event in Taylor. Ever since, the district has offered us a venue.”
A CBC article says a powwow is a traditional Indigenous celebration where people dance, sing, and buy or sell crafts.Â
Modern powwows began in the 1950s on reserves and in cities nationwide, but the ceremonies involving drumming, dancing and education have existed for centuries.Â
Drumming and dance competitions will be featured throughout the event, involving First Nations members ranging from youth to Elders.Â

Baked goods and Indigenous crafts will be available for attendees to taste, and artisan pieces will be on display for sale. Door prizes and raffles will also be part of the event, and an Elders tent will be available.
Alcohol and drug use is strictly prohibited at the gathering.
Greyeyes is confident this year’s festivities will open more eyes in the community to the fantastic joys of Indigenous cultures.
“You’re going to see the Indigenous community through the people and organizations who help put on this event,” said Greyeyes. “We like to showcase our hospitality, and you’ll see that hospitality shining through.”
“Some people say they will come for a little while, but they end up spending the whole day. You’ll see people of all nationalities come and enjoy the beautiful display of Indigenous peoples.”
The Spirit of the Peace Pow Wow will begin on June 7th at 7:00 p.m. with the Grand Entry and last until June 9th.
The final grand entry will take place at noon on Sunday at the Taylor District Ice Centre located at 9880 Cherry Avenue.Â
Admission to the event is free, although donations are welcome.Â
