FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Three new wildfires sparked Friday afternoon in the Peace region.

According to the Prince George Fire Centre, a 1,900-hectare wildfire originating in Alberta south of Goodlow was spotted in the region on May 5th at 1:36 p.m. It is suspected to be human-caused. In B.C., the fire is called the Boundary Lake wildfire and is exhibiting extreme fire behaviour. Late Friday evening, the Peace River Regional District issued an evacuation order and evacuation alert for Goodlow and Boundary Lake residents. The Peace River Regional District opened their emergency operations centre, and they, along with the B.C. Wildfire Service are monitoring all the wildfires in the region. Currently, the only evacuation orders and alerts issued are for the Boundary Lake wildfire (G80220).

Alberta has fire bans in place across the province, and parts of the county of Grande Prairie have been evacuated. The evacuation order includes all residents between Township Road 710 to the Wapiti River and between Highway 40 and Range Road 73.

A fire northeast of the Coffee Creek fire, close to Red Creek Road, also sparked on Friday afternoon just after 2 p.m. It is considered out of control at 475 hectares, and the cause is under investigation. The B.C. Wildfire Service has three initial attack crews, one unit crew, two helicopters and a structure protection unit that responded to the fire.

A 15-hectare fire north of the Peace River Corridor Provincial Park was discovered on May 5th at 2:33 p.m. It is considered out of control, and the cause is under investigation.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, there are approximately 19 wildfires in the region.
