SEXSMITH, A.B. — Lord Stanley’s Cup, the Holy Grail of hockey fans and players alike, is going to be coming to the Peace Region this weekend.

The Stanley Cup is going to be brought to Sexsmith, Alberta on Saturday, July 16th by NHL player Carter Rowney. Rowney won the Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins after defeating the Nashville Predators in six games in this year’s Stanley Cup final last month. Rowney grew up playing hockey in Sexsmith before going to a Jr. A career with the Grande Prairie Storm.

The 28 year-old also played for the University of North Dakota for four years before stints with the AHL’s Abbostford Heat and the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL. After playing for the Penguins’ farm team for three seasons, Rowney was called up to play his first NHL game with the Penguins back on January 31st, ironically another win against the Preds.
