SD 59 school bus sign extended

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – School District 59 has added a 4.5-foot-long stop sign onto one of their buses, extending it into the oncoming lane.

After a miscommunication between the district and the ministry of transportation earlier this week, Energeticcity has confirmed that it is School District 59 with the extended stop sign.

According to the ministry, the arm is designed to break off and drop to the road if hit.

The ministry reminds drivers that they must stop for the school bus when the red lights are flashing and when you see a bus’ amber lights flashing, slow down and prepare to stop.

A five-year-old boy named Adam Ranger was killed by a truck near his home after getting off his school bus in 2000 in Ontario. Adam’s family started the “Let’s Remember Adam – Stop for the School Bus” campaign that continues today.

“I often wonder what kind of man he would be, what he would do for a living, and what his job would be,” Adam’s brother Pierre Ranger told CBC News. “But I’ll never get to find out because someone didn’t stop for the bus lights.”

Drivers who fail to stop behind a bus with its sign out and lights on could be issued a $368 fine.
