FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Peace River Hydro Partners has donated $25,000 to the Tse’k’wa Heritage Society in honour of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
Tse’k’wa, “Rock House” in Dane-zaa, is a National Historic Site with deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Dane-zaa people that dates back more than 12,500 years.
It was formally known as the Charlie Lake Cave and is an important element of the identity of the Dane-zaa.
Tse’k’wa is nationally recognized for revealing the earliest humans and their movement over time, showing their way of life, cultures, and post-glacial environmental change.
This donation will help to assist the Society as they change from a volunteer-managed site into a year-round public interpretive education and cultural centre.
The goal of this facility is to have a space to share the history and vibrant culture with local residents, schools, and tourists. Funds will also be used to enhance the educational capacity of the organization through educational planning, resources, and assets.
In a release, Tse’k’wa Heritage Society President Garry Oker says, “We need to create cultural heritage education programs to share with the public the importance of this national historic site in our region.”
Executive Director of the Society, Alyssa Currie says the donation from PRHP will help to provide better learning experiences for everyone.
