City stresses points of importance as Site C proceeds

The City indicates that it is prepared to work with the Province to ensure the success of the project, but policies need to be put in place to make sure that the concerns of citizens are met.

In a release Mayor Lori Ackerman said, “We have worked diligently though this process to ensure our community was represented during the decision making process and we will continue to work to ensure a positive impact for our community. This project cannot be built in isolation of a community and must therefore be built with the communities in mind.”

There are four principals the City states must be established and maintained pertaining to construction of the dam:

1. Council will maintain its legitimate authority to make decisions concerning the future of the community.

2. The City’s long-term plans for building community will be enhanced through Site C.

3. Financial implications associated with the construction or operations of Site C will be borne by B.C.
Hydro and the Province of B.C., not existing or future Fort St. John tax payers.

4. The project must provide benefits to the community consistent with the City’s vision for the development of a sustainable community.

There is currently no agreement in place between the City and B.C. Hydro.
