Military convoy returning to Dawson Creek

"I've followed them on Facebook," says Dawson Creek Tourism Development Coordinator Samantha Gibeault. "They said it's gone well. "It looked like they were cold some of the time… they've been bundled up, but it looks like it's been a good time."

Fort St. John and Charlie Lake residents can get one last glimpse at the group of over 85 historic military vehicles, as they again spend tomorrow night camping in Charlie Lake.

After a group breakfast at the Fort St. John Legion Thursday morning, they will head to the Mile 0 City, arriving around 11:45 a.m.

The vehicles will all be on display at the EnCana Events Centre starting at noon, August 30.

The Military Vehicle Preservation Society was the second, larger convoy to take the trip, following the Canadian Western Command Military Vehicle Society, which left July 31.

That group disbanded in Fairbanks, and have made their way back on their own.

Both convoys took on the historic highway to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its building.

The route was built in 1942 during World War II to get supplies to and increase the army's presence in Alaska. Since then it has become a major trading route, and helped the growth of the several communities along it.
