Almost $900 raised for Attawapiskat
Residents are living in tents and temporary shelters while temperatures drop dangerously low, and many buildings lack electricity and running water.
Knott sold food and collected donations over the lunch hour, as well as letters written to Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Chuck Strahl, urging him to help the community get a school back. The elementary school in Attawapiskat was closed in May of 2000 because of possible health problems from a massive diesel fuel leak in the area in 1979.
The fundraiser also included the efforts of youth at the Rising Spirit Youth Centre who helped make poster boards and wrote cards for the community's residents.
The money has been sent to True North Aid, a group in Ottawa who has been bringing donations and supplies to the community. The cards, in addition to three books purchased from the library with an additional donation, were sent directly to Attawapiskat.
