The Flyers got the bad news on Thursday. BC Hockey has decided to abandon the Savage Cup this year.

Instead, BC Hockey will hold a five-game series between the Powell River Regals and the Whitehorse Huskies, to determine BC’s representative at this year’s Allan Cup. The series will be held in Whitehorse during the first week of April.

Of course, the Flyers didn’t need to play in a Savage Cup, as they are already guaranteed a spot in the national championship, as host team.

But the Flyers were three-time defending champions, and eager to defend their title. More importantly, the Savage Cup would have been a key stepping stone to the Allan Cup, particularly for a team desperate for ‘AAA’ competition.

Flyers GM Rob Larson says BC Hockey will award the title of BC Senior ‘AAA’ Champions to whichever BC team finishes the highest at the Allan Cup in April.

BC Hockey representatives have been unavailable for comment so far. Our staff will keep trying to get an official explanation from the governing body.
