Case of Kiskatinaw Murder goes to trial in Prince George

A Prince George Court heard the story of a young hitchhiker whose body was found near Kiskatinaw Provincial Park.

Cindy Burk was found in July of 1990 after being last seen near Prophet River earlier that month.  In November of 2006 the RCMP arrested Paul Russell Deleno Felker in Fort St. John and charged him with second-degree murder. 

The court heard that Cindy’s body was found bruised and covered in leaves and tree branches.  The 19 year old died as a result of having her throat cut. Forensic investigators collected semen samples that allegedly match Felker’s DNA. 

According to a CBC report, the defence believes the DNA only shows that Felker had contact with Burk and not that he killed her. 

The RCMP were able to make the 2006 arrest after an undercover operation had police pretend to be gang members.  The RCMP were then able to tape Felker admitting to the crime. 

Its believed that Cindy Burk was hitchhiking from the Yukon to Saskatchewan when she was killed.

The trial is expected to last 3 weeks and continues Tuesday.
