BC Hydro conducts short-term spill at W.A.C. Bennett Dam

BC Hydro is conducting a short-term spill at the W.A.C. Bennett Dam with a total discharge expected to be 1,300 cubic metres per second.

HUDSON’S HOPE, B.C. — BC Hydro is conducting a short-term spill at the W.A.C. Bennett, with a total discharge expected to be 1,300 cubic metres per second. 

According to Kate O’Neil, a BC Hydro spokesperson, “The spill is needed because of higher flows into the Williston Reservoir combined with reduced discharge capacity through the powerhouse because of maintenance activities.” 

BC Hydro is conducting a short-term spill at the W.A.C. Bennett, with a total discharge expected to be 1,300 cubic metres per second — below the maximum plant discharge of 1,968 cubic metres per second.’

It does not expect any downstream issues, as total releases are below the Bennett Dam’s normal operating range. 

The spill started on June 29. “We’re monitoring the situation and will have a better idea towards the end of the week,” O’Neill said. 

BC Hydro is asking the public to remain cautious as reservoir conditions can change at any time.
