DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — A Dawson Creek-based stock car driver has found his own way to honour victims of the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting.

Nine people, including the assailant, lost their lives after the shooting took place on February 10th at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence, shattering the community and sparking countless tributes – including signage honouring victims and one survivor – and support throughout Canada and the world.

Cody Evans, a stock car driver in the Wescar Late Model Touring Series, has driven a Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the series since 2025.

The series, sponsored by Applied Industrial Technologies, hosts stock car events throughout Western Canada from May to August.

On Saturday, May 23rd, Evans’ black car will have pictures of six of the victims killed for the series’ season opener in Hythe, Alberta. The decals will remain on the car throughout the season.

Evans told Energeticcity.ca how the tragedy hit close to home as a father of two young children, adding the desire to place the portraits on his car will “remember” the victims of the shooting “in a positive way.”

“We are all connected as a community,” said Evans. “I just wanted to do that [to] remember them in a positive way, not so much as to what happened [but] to remember who they were.”

Evans said he has had some interactions with victims’ families, and tried to learn about each child whose life was cut short.

He has also arranged free entry fees and up to $1,000 of food vouchers for the affected families through sponsorships for the season-opening race on May 23rd.

“[If we] get the families out for a day just to get their mind off it [and] give them five minutes or a minute of peace,” said Evans. “There’s nothing that’ll ever change what happened, but if we can just get them out for one moment where they aren’t thinking of the other incident, that’s all I want for them.”

Evans also said his car will be displayed at the Mile Zero Summer Cruise event from July 10th to July 12th in Dawson Creek, and he also hopes to take the car to Tumbler Ridge before the end of the school year to show students.

The Applied Industrial Technologies Wescar Late Model Touring Series begins on Saturday, May 23rd in Hythe, Alberta.
