Team BC’s Canadian Judo championships includes members from Dawson Creek

The Canadian Judo Championships will take place from May 14th to 17th in Calgary.

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — Dawson Creek judoka are among some of Team B.C.’s best as they begin the 2026 Canadian Judo Championships.

According to a press release, Dawson Creek is the northernmost city represented in the province at the competition, which starts on Thursday, May 14th in Calgary, Alberta.

In total, the team consists of 166 participants, including 130 athletes, 30 coaches and six officials.

Members of Dawson Creek’s Mile Zero Judo Club posted to Facebook on Wednesday, May 13th about their impending participation in the championship.

A self-defence martial art which focuses on gaining an advantage over an attacker without strikes, Judo has roots tracing back to Japan in the 19th century.

A sanctioned Olympic sport, Judo was introduced in Canada in 1924 by Shigetaka Sasaki, according to Judo BC’s website.

Competitions during the championships will include Ne-waza or ground techniques, and Kata or competitions for proper form.

The 2026 Canadian Judo championships will conclude on Sunday, May 17th, with senior competition.
