HUDSONS HOPE, B.C. — A new recreation site in Hudson’s Hope has opened ahead of the May long weekend.

In a press release on May 14th, 2026, BC Hydro and the District of Hudson’s Hope announced the opening of the new DA Thomas Recreation area.

BC Hydro said the recreation was built as part of its Site C community investment program for the Site C Clean Energy Project. The recreation area will be owned and maintained by BC Hydro.

The recreation area is located at the bottom of D.A. Thomas Road, neighbouring the Site C reservoir.

Matt Wilson, Senior Vice President of Safety at BC Hydro, explained the site’s purpose.

“The new D.A. Thomas Recreation Site is about creating lasting access for the community to the outdoor recreation area today and well into the future,” he said.

The boat launch at the D.A. Thomas Recreation site was closed due to the filling of the Site C reservoir, along with the Halfway River and Lynx Creek boat launches.

According to the release, the new site will offer picnic facilities, an information shelter and a walking trail. It also said a gangway and floating dock for small craft will be installed in the future.

BC Hydro said the opening of the recreation area coincides with the seasonal reopening of additional recreation and visitor amenities across Hudson’s Hope ahead of the May long weekend.

On May 16th, the W.A.C. Bennett Dam Visitor Centre is expected to open. The Dinosaur Boat Launch, the District of Hudson’s Hope Campground and parks, and the visitor centre are also opening for the season.

The release said upgrades to district campgrounds and parks include improvements funded by a $50,000 grant from BC Hydro.

Travous Quibell, Mayor of Hudson’s Hope, spoke about how the new site will benefit the community.

“The new D.A. Thomas Recreation Area, along with the seasonal reopening of our campgrounds, parks and Visitor Centre, supports residents and visitors alike by encouraging people to spend time outdoors and explore the Peace region,” he said. “We look forward to welcoming everyone for the May long weekend and throughout the summer season.”

BC Hydro said it is preparing to open public access sites along the Site C reservoir, with a strong focus on safety. Boat launches on the reservoir are expected to open in early summer, it said, including new launches at Halfway River and Lynx Creek and a small craft at the new recreation site in Hudson’s Hope.

BC Hydro reminds visitors to the D.A. Thomas Recreation Site and other BC Hydro recreation sites to follow all posted safety signage while exercising caution.

It said boaters are required to obey all safety regulations, carry required equipment, including life jackets, and stay clear of BC Hydro dams and structures.

More information on recreation and visitor opportunities can be found on the BC Hydro website.
