FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Enbridge’s Westcoast pipeline system’s $4 billion expansion has received approval from the Canadian government.

It is an essential energy infrastructure project which has been found to be in the public interest, the release said.

The project has been designed to add approximately 300 million cubic feet per day of natural gas transportation capacity to the southern portion of the Westcoast pipeline system.

When in service, the release said, the added natural gas transportation capacity is expected to strengthen energy security and affordability by supporting access to natural gas during periods of high demand.

This natural gas is used to heat homes, hospitals, businesses, schools, support electric power generation and industrial activity across B.C. and global LNG exports.

The project is expected to contribute more than $3 billion to the Canadian economy, and hire approximately 2,500 workers during construction, including workers from local communities and Indigenous groups in B.C.

In the Peace River Regional District, over 100 construction workers are expected to be hired during the peak construction period to install the additional compressor unit at Compressor Station 2B.

A temporary workforce accommodation will be set up in the Pine Pass area.

The project will also generate tax revenue for provincial, regional and municipal governments, which helps pay for schools, hospitals, roads and other public infrastructure.

The release said the project will include the construction of new pipeline segments along the existing system, additional natural gas compression, upgrades and modifications to existing facilities.

“We are pleased with the approval of the Sunrise Expansion Program. This marks an important milestone for a critical energy infrastructure project that will help to ensure energy affordability and security,” said Ali Hendi, Enbridge director of projects and Sunrise Expansion Program project lead.

“This multi-year project has required hundreds of thousands of work hours to reach this stage, including design, environmental studies and engagement work with Indigenous and local communities. These efforts have strengthened and made the project better, and we remain committed to ongoing collaboration throughout this Project’s construction and operation phases.”

Construction is expected to begin in July 2026 with a targeted in-service date in late 2028, the release read.

Preparatory activities, which can include site set-up, transportation and mobilization of equipment and construction, may occur prior to this.

Enbridge is asking local workers and businesses to complete an online community interest form if they are interested in working, providing services, or accommodation for the project.
