British Columbia’s Transportation Ministry says a landslide in the northeastern community of Old Fort has shifted the road 62 metres downslope since Sunday.
The ministry says the 400-metre wide slide, which destroyed part of Old Fort Road, was moving at around 18 to 24 centimetres per hour as of Thursday.
Multiple properties in the community of roughly 150 people are under evacuation orders or alerts.
Residents who were not able to leave or who chose to stay after an evacuation order was issued late Monday have been asked to shelter in a safe place and conserve essential supplies, because access to community remains cut off.
The ministry says geotechnical staff are on site and will actively monitor the slide’s movement, which it says is “highly unpredictable.”
Jordan Kealy, the member of the legislature for the area, says this is the third time his constituents have been forced to evacuate from a landslide in recent years, and the provincial government should have reinforced the slope in the area.
