TAYLOR, B.C. — A firefighter association is hoping to raise $2,000 at its Mother’s Day Brunch this year.

The Taylor Volunteer Fire Fighter Association will host its annual event on May 10th at the Taylor Community Hall from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Justin Bolog, a captain with the Taylor Fire Rescue, told Energeticcity.ca the Mother’s Day function has been happening since he started 15 years ago.

He said: “The fire department puts on a Mother’s Day breakfast to recognize and appreciate the mothers within our community and surrounding area.”

Last year, he said approximately 200 people attended the event and it collected $1,200 in donations.

“It’s a non-profit event, so any donation that we take, we split with a couple of charities,” Bolog added. “Last year, we did a 50-50 split between the Taylor Elementary School lunch program and the Taylor community church pantry program.”

This year, it hopes to raise $2,000 to be donated to the Peace Community Church pantry in Taylor and Wounded Warriors Canada.

“The donations are going to go to the Taylor community church pantry, which services single mothers or single-parent families and people that are just struggling with buying groceries,” he said.

“The second one will be Wounded Warriors Canada, which is a program that the Taylor fire department has joined that deals with mental health issues for first responders.”

Bolog said Petron Communications has donated money towards the food, while Steel Toes Workwear has donated some Yeti mugs for a Mother’s Day draw.

“In addition, retired captain Bert Eisler and current firefighter Shannon Bolog have built a wood planter box,” he said. “With help of sponsors, this year, we’re able to give away two prizes.”

The brunch will include pancakes, scrambled eggs, ham and sausage, and attendees can donate $5 per plate.

He said: “If somebody doesn’t want to or can’t afford to, then we don’t turn anybody away. They still can come in and have their breakfast.”
