Peace River North MLA calls for better mental health support in wake of Tumbler Ridge mass shooting

TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. — Peace River North MLA has encouraged anyone who is struggling to seek out support for their mental health as he joins the chorus of public figures and organizations sending condolences to Tumbler Ridge after the deadly school shooting. 

Jordan Kealy went live on Facebook on February 11th in a video in which he urges anyone affected by the tragedy to reach out to support services.  

The shooting claimed the lives of nine people – plus the suspect – on February 10th, including six killed at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. 

“It this all stems back to mental health and how important it is that we need to have supports in place for people that are having issues, going through tough times, that if they need help, being able to find help,” he said.

He also referenced the deaths of two young people in Fort St. John over the 2025-26 Christmas break. 

“This government, the NDP, need to step up and provide a lot more for mental health and these supports in place to make sure something like this never happens again, especially this tragic loss of youth: who knows what these kids could have been when they got older?”

Kealy joins a raft of leaders around the world reacting to the tragedy. 

“I wanted to do this video to get it out there, to let people know there’s nothing wrong with showing emotion,” Kealy added. ”And to let people know what you’re going through and that you can talk about what’s going on and what you might have experienced.

“So please, if you’re having any problems or struggling, reach out to a teacher, a counsellor, even if it’s a firefighter, a paramedic, a police [officer]…there’s always somebody that you can talk to and try and get help with. For the family members, take the time to make sure that your kids are doing alright.”
